7 Hair Mistakes You Might Be Making

You may not know it, but your hair care habits could be damaging your hair.

Here are 7 common mistakes you could be making according to experts Matt Fugate of Sally Hershberger salon, Ryan Trygstad of Marie Robinson Salon and Rona O’Connor, owner of Lukaro.

1. Waiting too long between haircuts.

Waiting until your hair grows out of the cut makes it difficult for your stylist to follow the haircut you like. The rule of thumb is to get a cut every six weeks.

2. Washing your hair every day.

The need for daily shampooing is a myth. Shampooing the hair strips it of natural oils which keep the strands moisturized. Shampoo every other day and use only the conditioner on shampoo-less days.

3. Using the hottest blow dryer setting.

The heat can fry your locks, causing it to become dry and brittle. Use warm or cool settings, especially if you are not doing any styling.

4. Brushing wet hair.

This is definitely to be avoided since brushing can pull at the strands and cause them to break or tangle. Dry your hair until 80% of the moisture is out before you start styling.

5. Using hair spray with a hot iron.

This is one of the worst habits because hair spray contains alcohol. When alcohol comes in contact with the heat of the iron, it literally burns, frying your hair with it.

6. Going overboard with conditioner.

We all want luscious locks but using too much conditioner can weigh the hair down. Use a pea-sized amount in the morning and apply only to the driest parts.

7. Coloring all over to fix the roots.

Apply the hair color only on the new growth to avoid dying over the parts that already have color. This will help you avoid over-processing the part of your hair that has been previously treated.
